Ayurveda In Malaysia

The Government of India, has always acknowledged the invaluable gift of knowledge and practices of indigenous systems of medicine in India. The role of traditional systems of medicine, in personal and community health, has prompted the Indian Government, to upgrade the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy, to a separate Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) in the year 2014.

The relationship between India and Malaysia dates back to several centuries, and the bilateral ties have spread across many areas of cooperation. India and Malaysia have well-developed systems of traditional medicines; and have developed strong co-operation in this field.

The two ministries of the Indian Government, namely the Ministry of AYUSH and the Ministry of External Affairs, have taken earnest measures, to promote the Traditional Indian Medicine Systems in Malaysia, especially Ayurveda and Siddha.

A memorandum of understanding, on the cooperation in the field of Traditional Medicine, was signed between the two governments on October 27, 2010, during the visit of Shri. Manmohan Singh, Honorable Prime Minister of India to Malaysia. Ayurveda and Siddha have been included under the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM) Division of Ministry of Health, Malaysia.

The Government of India, has taken pro-active role in promoting AYUSH systems in Malaysia, in the following categories.

Deputation of Experts

The Indian Government, deputes one Ayurveda physician, two Ayurveda therapists and one Siddha physician, every year to provide AYUSH services in the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM) Units, of Ministry of Health, Malaysia, under its Indian Technical and Economic Co-operation (ITEC) program.

Contribution of Ayurvedic equipment

On the occasion of introducing of Ayurveda services in the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Unit at Hospital Rehabilitation Cheras, the Indian government, donated a fully-automated shirodhara machine.

Academic chair

National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, India has signed an MoU with the University of Tunku Abdul Rahman for establishing an Ayurvedic Academic chair to promote cooperation in the field of education, training, research, publication and popularization of Ayurveda system of medicine in Malaysia.
